Beautiful sunbirds are tiny, barely reaching four inches in length, with the breeding male’s “tail streamers” adding another few inches to its body length. Like hummingbirds and the honeyeaters of Australia, sunbirds feed on nectar, and they share some physical similarities, but they are not related. Sunbirds are strongly sexually dimorphic, with males sporting flashy, iridescent plumage and females more subdued in coloration. I have been too busy for anything as of late.While many of the approximately 100 sunbird species have colorful names reflecting their good looks-violet-tailed, blue-throated, ruby-cheeked, purple-banded, and scarlet-tufted, among others-a couple of types just cut to the chase to state the obvious: the superb sunbird and the beautiful sunbird. Every day they consume one almost completely. My biggest crematogastor colony which is quite active eat the worms very quickly. So it could be that I have over fed them. What I did notice about the species e colonies are that they are still eating older pieces of crickets and spiders.
My species E colonies eat the worms so slowly that the worms rot into brown slime puddles before they finish. Most of my crematogastor colonies are hardly foraging, though they did pick at the worms. pennsylvanicus never even went to the feeding area. I currently keep them in bins with a heated mat and heat lamp.įeeding results are mostly poor I believe for two reasons: most of my colonies are small and are not actively foraging right now ie C. My only problem with the worms is that they smell a little and need to be kept at 84 to 90 Fahrenheit to be renewable and self sustaining. I fed all my colonies the day they arrived. Setting them up took about 20 minutes,and some have begun to pupate (spelling?). Needless to say, I am currently testing this out and I have had mixed results.įirst, I ordered about 1000 for $30. Then I had thought how often I had seen ants carrying caterpillars to their nests,and I remembered about how some reptile keepers breed wax worms as meals for their reptiles. Specifically, I didn't have time to collect the usual meals of spiders and crickets. Ok so,I have been working so many hours that I have not even had the time to properly care for my ant colonies.
